Your Career - It's a Big World Out There, Even in Closed-System Big Law
For the majority of lawyers who now go to Big Law to work, it's a starter job. Partnership in general or aiming to be a partner at that law firm usually isn't the plan.
So, there's the question on Subreddit Big Law: How much notice to give when leaving? Here's the thread.
Well, the bottom line on that is this: What does the law firm require? Some might require four weeks. Others two weeks.
The consensus, if the law firm doesn't mandate more notice, is that two weeks is the best way to go. Longer could create an awkward situation.
However, those commenting warn that the law firm could be annoyed about your going, particularly if it's to a higher-ranked firm. As a result, there could be a reason to fire you. So, be prepared to lose out on that compensation. If you are based in a pricey metro area like Manhattan you might have a financial setback if you miss out on that two-weeks' salary.
Fear the firm's wrath? If you're not using it as a reference you don't have to give a damn. It's now a big world out there, even in the once-tradition-bound law-firm industry. Many other industries are equally fluid. It's accepted: Some things just don't work out.
