The Power to Declare What's Urgent ...

 Sounds so reasonable.

RollonFriday reports that Dominic Griffiths, managing partner of Mayer Brown's London Office, instructed partners to be hands-off in tinkering with the fee-earners' vacation time. Except, of course, unless the matter is urgent. That's the rub.

Given most partners' speeded-up sense of time, what wouldn't seem urgent. Currently, some feel it's totally okay to send unimportant emails at all hours and expect a prompt response. Being on holiday does not exempt the lawyers from not answering emails pronto.

Partners have profound power over who will be able to rise in the law firm. Therefore, if they want a fee-earner to cancel annual leave you bet the lawyer probably will cave.

The lawyer that he is Griffiths should define in detail the concept of "urgent."
