Power - The Give-Backs
"Though the labor market remains tight and many people still have leverage to negotiate high salaries and remote accommodations, some are bracing for a day when things won’t be so great." - The Wall Street Journal, June 16, 2022.
Ranging from the fear of layoffs (or losing client accounts) to our imploding investments, many of us are rethinking how to conduct ourselves with those who provide us income. A big piece of that is considering what we can negotiate and what to treat as the third rail.
That shift is reaching into law firms. On Subreddit Big Law the tone is different. At one time it exuded optimism about doing laterals to put together the ideal working situation. Now, as this Reddit thread about an IP lawyer contemplating a lateral indicates, there currently is the notion of playing it safe. The general economy is explicitly mentioned.
The issue is: How much power will return to management? Will we who have to earn a living lose what we have gained during the pandemic boom?
