Not Feeling Good At All About Things

According to the influential University of Michigan research, reports Politico, even the top third of income-earners are wobbly on optimism. Politico gives that the catchy phrase "cratering of optimism."

It's an apt description.

The implications can be profound.

At the top of the list, as Politico hammers, could be the fate of the Democrats in the midterms. Voters could decide to try something else and not continue to go with progressives. If things don't pick up by the 2024 elections Democrats could be shut out the White House and Congress long term.

Then there is the spending piece. A frugal mindset can set in. Consumer spending, which accounts for about 60% of GDP, could fall off a cliff.

In addition, the national ethos can harden. It can be perceived that we are in an economy of scarcity. So, hold on tight to what you got. That includes your own hope. Don't try to increase anyone else's.
