Lip Readers - Assume They Are Everywhere (including three tables over at that posh restaurant)
"Lip readers reveal what royal family really said to each other at Jubilee" - The New York Post, June 6, 2022.
The institution of The Royals - often referred to as The Firm - is highly political. It has to be to keep justifying its existence to those who count. So every member of The Firm should have been briefed that speaking low or "in strict confidence" or one-on-one would not ensure privacy. Lip readers have long been parachuted in to pick up anything and everything that is verbalized.
Of course, inside the beltway in America there are myriad gala affairs. Those also spill out onto the golf course and other public venues. Everyone in the loop, including their aides, understand the high probability of lip readers being there or zooming in with special lenses. Three tables over in that posh restaurant could be lip readers. That's why smoothness is a necessity - the art of creating the illusion of meaningful and engaging conversation.
Lawyers, of course, have that down cold. The leadership in most elite law firms are politicos. Often they are even registered lobbyists. Some have never been real. Some have lost the ability to be real. Some still try to maintain some kind of human connection.
In doing assignments for them I know to expect only tested-out scripting. Authentic conversation is too high-risk. Performance art is what you get.
