Hello, Slack Invite-Only Network Forums for Job Search - Goodbye, LinkedIn

"Forget LinkedIn—Your Next Job Offer Could Come via Slack - Instant-messaging platform has become speedy, more-informal way for professionals, employers to find each other" - The Wall Street Journal, June 1, 2022.

What can kick LinkedIn to the curb is the invite-only network forums on Slack. They include professionals in tech,  HR, sales, recruiting, and more.

Once you get an invite - usually from someone you know in the field - you're in. In addition, that professional and others in your field can endorse you. That creates a comfort zone for employers. Also they can scan your postings over a period of time to get a sense of who you are and how you approach work. The rest of the process can move along quickly.

LinkedIn has acquired so much baggage. The worst of it is the non-stop selling. My gallows humor is that if I were drowning and someone on LinkedIn tried to sell me a life preserver I wound turn it down. I have had it with the sales pitches.

Another problem with LinkedIn is that it has evolved from a professional network to a personal one. What get the likes and comments are those stories about overcoming obstacles. That gets old. In addition, some of those obstacles are what I don't really want to hear about. Life is tough enough.

But, for now, too many of us will probably be on LinkedIn. That is, until the Slack story gets more widely circulated.
